Stekken en zaailingen hebben behoeften aan een veel hogere relatieve luchtvochtigheid (RV) dan planten die in de bloei staan. Een hoge relatieve luchtvochtigheid (RV) bij stekken en zaailingen zorgen ervoor dat deze alle energie kunnen steken in het ontwikkelen van een sterk wortelgestel. Het Dampdrukdeficiet (VPD)\u00a0 is het verschil tussen de dampdruk binnenin het blad vergeleken met de dampdruk van de omgevingslucht. Dit verschil bepaald het waterverlies van de plant. Bij een te hoge omgevingsdruk zullen de sapstromen door de plant vertragen. Ook al staan de stomaten volledig open. Hierdoor zullen er tekorten aan niet mobiele voedingselement als eerste ontstaan. Zoals Calcium (Ca) bijvoorbeeld. Een Calcium(Ca) tekort kan dus ontstaan door een te hoge relatieve luchtvochtigheid (RV). Bij een lage relatieve luchtvochtigheid (RV) is de dampdruk van de omgeving lager en zal de plant gaan transpireren. De plant sluit nu de stomaten om waterverlies en verwelking te minimaliseren. Met als gevolg dat fotosynthese afneemt waardoor de groei van het gewas wordt temperatuur. Warme lucht kan meer vocht bevatten. Zodra de temperatuur stijgt neemt de relatieve luchtvochtigheid af. De lucht wordt droger. Als de lucht afneemt gebeurt het tegenovergestelde en wordt de lucht natter. De niveaus kun je aflezen op een hygrometer. Dit instrument zou bij iedere binnenteelt gebruikt moeten worden. De hygrometer gebruik je in combinatie met een thermometer.
